Abbreviations: Titles such as Mr., Dr., Prof.
Similes and Metaphors: comparisons such as "My brother eats like a pig." is a simile because the comparison uses the word "like". A simile may also use the word "as" for example: "She is as cute as a button." A metaphor is a comparison that does not use the words "like" or "as".
Alliteration: the use of the same beginning sounds over and over in a sentence, paragraph or poem to get the reader's attention. "Caroline collected colorful candy canes and coconut Christmas cookies in her corner cupboard."
Personification: giving human qualities to an idea, object or animal. They have thoughts, feelings and/or actions of people.
